Born in Wagner, South Dakota, James was the son of James Vincent and Mildred Francis O’Connell. His life was defined by service, curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep love for people.
James proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy Veteran, including time spent in Antarctic exploration, an experience he carried with pride and often shared through his remarkable storytelling. After retiring from the Navy, he continued to pour his energy into the things he loved most: woodworking, history, rescuing Shelties, and enjoying the comfort of his Wife’s baked goods. He had a gift for connecting with others and never missed an opportunity to share a story, a laugh, or a moment of kindness.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Dorothy E. O’Connell, and their daughter Michele R. Blucher, (James A. Blucher) of Sutherland, Virginia. He was a proud grandfather to Deborah C. Blucher (Michael R. Gonzales)of Dallas, Texas, and James M. Blucher of Sutherland, Virginia, and a delighted great grandfather to Matthew J. Gonzales of Dallas, Texas.
He is also survived by his sister June VanZee of Brookings, South Dakota, and was preceded in death by parents and siblings James and Mildred O’Connell, DeWayne O’Connell, Wanda O’Connell, and Donna Abdouch.
James had a special place in his heart for animals, especially his beloved Sheltie, Wesley. He was a proud supporter of the Leukemia Foundation and the ASPCA, reflecting his lifelong compassion for others.
James leaves behind a legacy of service, warmth, humor, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
