James Whaley, 54, passed away on June 10, 2026, in Pensacola, Florida. A gifted Executive Chef and a man known for greeting everyone with a warm, unforgettable smile, James lived a life rooted in kindness, creativity, and quiet strength. His presence made people feel welcome, and his cooking brought joy to countless lives.
James was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, where he was recognized as a football blue chip prospect — a standout athlete whose discipline, drive, and natural ability set him apart early in life. That same determination carried him into his culinary journey, where he pursued his passion at Johnson & Wales University, studying in both Charleston, South Carolina, and Providence, Rhode Island. His education and talent shaped a long and meaningful career as an Executive Chef, where he poured his heart into every dish and every kitchen he led.
James is survived by his devoted wife, Diane Whaley; his mother, Asami Eckhardt, and stepfather, Marshall Eckhardt; and his father, Harry Whaley. He is also survived by his sisters — his older sister, Raquel Dien, and his younger sister, Janice Whaley — who will forever hold close the bond they shared with him. Though James had no children of his own, he was a loving and supportive uncle to numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Trang Nguyen, whose influence and love remained with him throughout his life.
James will be remembered for his generous heart, his gentle humor, his extraordinary culinary talent, and the warm smile that made everyone feel seen and welcomed. His absence leaves a deep void, but his memory will continue to comfort and inspire those who loved him.
Visitation will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, Florida 32506, on June 19, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, followed by a Rosary.
