Jeff was born June 18, 1939 in Rochester, NY to Ralph and Alice Sutherland. He was big brother to his two younger sisters Sydney and Prudence Sutherland. As a youth, he played the violin and piano, earned the Eagle Scout Award and participated on the high school track team. He graduated from West High School in Rochester. He attended Cornell University where he met the love of his life Bonnie while riding on a campus bus. They were married June 16, 1962. He later attended graduate school at Syracuse University where they lived in student housing and spent a summer living in a tent In the Adirondack Mountains while Jeff conducted field research to earn his Ph.D. in Geology.
Jeff and Bonnie's marriage led them to East Grand Rapids, Ml where they raised their two children, Jeffrey Matthew and Anastasia. Jeff's career led him to work for three different Environmental Consulting firms as a professional geologist and civil engineer specializing in the decontamination of groundwater.
At the age of 62, he shed his professional business suit attire and moved to Pensacola, FL., where he donned sleeveless t-shirts, shorts, and a gold chain he wore around his neck.
Infatuated with Florida, he convinced his family to follow him. His daughter-in-law Ana Maria Lopez de Sutherland inspired him to learn Spanish so he could speak with his extended family in Uruguay. He lived vicariously through his grandsons Jeffrey Andrew and Jovaney who followed in his footsteps playing instruments and studying the sciences and engineering.
He is well known as a professional geologist, classical concert violinist, an avid reader of suspenseful espionage novels, a 10K running race competitor, star gazer, math tutor and elementary school orchestra volunteer. As an exercise enthusiast, he earned his black belt in Tae-kwon-do in his late 60's. However, he is best known as Gramps.
Beloved husband, grandfather, father, and father-in-law, you are deeply missed.
