John Edwin Holsberry, Jr., PhD, died on Saturday, February 09, 2013.
A native of Pensacola, Florida, he was preceded in death by his parents, J. Edwin and Elizabeth S. Holsberry. John attended local schools and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1954. He received a BA degree in English from Vanderbilt University and an MA from Florida State University. He also graduated from Duke University with a PhD in English Literature. As an English professor, he taught at several universities in Connecticut for some years. While teaching, his work was published in the Texas Studies in Literature and Language. John returned to his native Pensacola in 1981 and became involved in real estate and financial planning. In 1993 he and several partners purchased the Olde Townhouse Office Complex, which he managed until 1998 when it was sold. During college, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he had taught classes in theology in southern literature. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Harper Holsberry, who has been his loving and faithful caregiver for many years, and other family and close friends.
John’s family and friends will always remember him for his sharp intellect and his wonderful sense of humor.
There will be a memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church, Manna Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
