John L. McDonald, a devoted father and loving husband, a proud veteran, a faithful servant of God, and a man of the people, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born on June 26, 1934.
John served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force, including during the Vietnam War, and later dedicated decades of his life to the United States Civilian Service.
His work, marked by integrity and quiet leadership, earned the respect of everyone who knew him. He was not just a public servant; he was a moral compass, a steady hand, and a warm presence in times of uncertainty.
He was also a dedicated member of the Masonic community, holding a Fifty-Year Certificate from the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Florida. His faith and fellowship guided every step he took.
Whether working with his hands, helping a neighbor, or sharing his love for classic country records, John brought joy and kindness to the world. He never met a stranger, and to meet him was to be seen, heard, and valued. A man of deep faith, he lived in accordance with the Twenty-third Psalm and believed with his whole heart in the promise of eternal life.
He is survived by his children, John L. McDonald and Greg J. McDonald; his sister, Maxine Haywood; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Ann McDonald; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah Elizabeth McDonald, and his son, Marcus S. McDonald.
A memorial service will be held at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel & Bayview Memorial Park, 3351 Scenic Highway 90E, Pensacola, FL 32503, on May 30, 2025. All who knew him are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of a man who served others selflessly, lived humbly, and loved deeply.
Wóčhaŋtognaka, the Lakota word for generosity, reflects the heart of both John’s life and the mission of Saint Joseph’s Indian School: to contribute to the well-being of one’s people and all life by sharing and giving freely. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Saint Joseph’s Indian School, PO Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326, in memory of John’s enduring spirit and his lifelong dedication to service.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” - Psalm 23:6
