Johnny was born in Pensacola on Halloween in 1953 to Lucille and Horace Lee Coburger II, the youngest of three children. He loved to credit his parents with choosing the best day of the year for a child to have a birthday. He grew up surrounded by his cousins, who so loved their "Johnny Paul."
He attended McMillan Elementary, Workman Jr. High, and Pensacola High School. After a stint in the Navy, he eventually settled in Fort Walton Beach, where he met the woman who would become his wife, Betty Beard. They married on November 23, 1986, and soon moved to Pensacola, where Johnny started the Silver Mine Pawn Shop.
In 2001 Johnny established Pensacola Billiard Sales and soon after started Legends Billiards, a pool hall where he and Betty spent so much time and made so many friends.
Since childhood Johnny loved bowling and spent many evenings with his friends at the local bowling alleys, especially Cordova Lanes. For nearly 30 years Johnny played in the NWF 8-Ball League with his beloved teammates. He loved Pensacola and its history, speaking often of the people, places and events that made this city so special. Whether times were good or bad, his generous spirit led him to give to others in need, right up until the week he died. Even when it seemed that he did not have much to give, he would find a way to help others.
Johnny loved the Lord, his wife, his children and grandchildren, The Beatles, Alabama football, and shooting pool. One of his great pleasures was attending Alabama games with his sons. His children grew up listening to great music and the wonderful stories he told.
Johnny leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 30 years, Betty Coburger, daughter Joyce (Mark) Southard, son Christopher (Brandy) Beard, daughter Jennifer Coburger, son Jonathan Coburger, daughter Dana (Dylan) Oursbourn, and daughter Jayme Brown, along with grandchildren Devan, Brayden, Nolan, Abrielle, Mia, Easton, and Aiden. He leaves also his brother Horace Lee III (Skip) and sister Bertie Lou, both of whom he loved and admired so much. He spent decades in Pensacola forming and nurturing friendships, and leaves behind his "old buddies" who he held so dear.
