1927-2012
After a 70 day valiant fight to get well our beloved husband, father and grandfather closed his eyes, reached out and took his guardian angels hand (daughter, Lisa Martinez) and together they are now our guardian angels at peace in Heaven.
He was born on November 6, 1927 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He joined the Army on January 10, 1947. He retired after 32 years of service. He received several awards: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, World War II Victory Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal (1st-9th Award), Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and UN Summer-Fall Offensive/Second Korean Winter/Korean Summer-Fall. He served as a medical corpsman in Korea upon returning to the United States he was trained as a nuclear weapons specialist at White Sands Proving Grounds in White Sands, New Mexico. He attended the language school in Fort Ord, California. He retired as a nuclear weapons specialist in Maintence and logistics. We are all very proud of all of father's accomplishments. He was always a good provider for his family. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother Marta Martinez, and his beloved daughter Lisa Martinez (12-10-10).
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Hortense Martinez; daughter, Carmen (Victor) Martinez; son, Tony (Tonya) Martinez; daughter, Julie (Ben) Brumley; son-in-law, Danny Brittingham; seven grandchildren Alexander Reimer of Washington DC, Michael Dormi of Rome, Italy, Joseph Martinez of Pensacola, FL, Brian Dormi of Pensacola, FL, Andrew (Vicki) Brumley of Renton, WA, Ryan Brumley of Renton, WA, Jessica Dormi of Pensacola, FL; goddaughter, Rita Dotson; sister-in-law, Daisy Hedaria; brother-in-law, Joe (Leslie) Poe; several nieces and nephews.
We want to thank first floor staff at Life Care Rehabilitation Center especially our niece Brandi Santiago for the excellent care they gave our father. We would also like to thank our cousin Angela Denmon and Rachael Bangs.
Pallbearers will be all of his grandsons and his son Tony. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Mondello, Scott Mondello, Gary Mondello II, Michael Moore, Eddie Ilano, and Marciano Sango.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home with the Rosary at 6:15 pm. The funeral will be on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 12:15pm at the funeral home with Father James Thoyalil officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
