Julianne S. Whitten passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on July 20, 2024, in Novi, Michigan at the age of 76. Known as Julie to her friends and Juju to her grandsons, she was the beloved daughter of Suzanne Smith Merritt (Keller), Bill Smith, and stepfather Charlie Merritt.
After graduating from Pensacola High in 1966, she flourished at Emory University and the University of Southern Mississippi. Her love for literature and learning prepared her for a short career as an educator at Escambia High and a lifelong love of reading.
In her youth, Julie excelled at golf, often breaking 80 for 18 holes. It was on the golf course that she met her future husband, Buddy Whitten. They married in 1969 and eventually moved to Michigan, where Buddy pursued a career in the golf industry and they raised their son, Chris. Later, they returned to Pensacola to be closer to family in retirement.
Julie was an avid sports fan whose competitive nature sometimes got the best of her while watching her favorite teams. She found joy in playing tennis, swimming, going to the movies, and spending time with the many friends she made throughout life.
Julie is survived by her husband, Buddy, son, Chris, his wife, Amy (White), and their sons, Graham and Lucas. Her family and friends will forever miss her warmth, intellect, and sharp sense of humor.
The family will hold a private service on Monday, July 29, followed by a reception for friends and family at Riviera 615 in Pensacola from noon to 2 PM, with remarks at 1 PM
