It is with both sorrow and deep gratitude that we celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose legacy of love, faith, and compassion will echo for generations. Karen Spears Gandy, 84, was called home on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. She is survived by her daughter and son in law Rick & Ellen Melton, daughter and son-in-law Kevin & Nan Jackson, her grandchildren Shelby and Kylee Jackson, Trae and wife Mollie Melton, and her great granddaughter Golden Mae ‘Goldie’ Melton.
She was born on July 29, 1941 in the quiet town of Ponce De Leon, Florida, to Elem and Annie Spears. She spent her adult life in Pensacola, Florida.
Her love for her family was fierce and unconditional. She embraced everyone she met with the same tenderness and grace, making strangers feel like lifelong friends. Plainview Baptist Church was her second home, and her church family, her extended kin. She worshiped with joy, served with humility, and lived her faith with quiet strength.
As a devoted nurse for over 20 years, she poured her heart into caring for others—whether they were patients in need or neighbors passing through hard times. Her hands were gentle, her heart generous, and her spirit unwavering.
After retiring from nursing, she stepped into what she called her “most prized job”—keeping her grandchildren. She lovingly referred to them as “Granny’s angels,” and poured every ounce of her heart into nurturing, guiding, and cherishing them.
She was a simple woman, never one for extravagance, yet she possessed a wealth that money could never buy. Her riches were found in laughter, in prayers whispered for others, and in countless lives she touched with her kindness. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, and her presence a comfort to the weary.
She was known for her legendary corn flake cookies, butter cream pound cake and unmatched cornbread dressing. These dishes weren’t just food—they were love served on a plate. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing card games and dominoes with family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and all nine of her beloved siblings. What a day of rejoicing the reunion in heaven must be—a chorus of laughter, hymns, and heavenly hugs. She leaves behind a legacy in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. We will miss her deeply, but we rejoice in the promise of heaven, where she now rests in the arms of her Savior.
A funeral service for Karen will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home, 1985 West Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, Florida 32534. Visitation will be held an hour prior.
