Born in 1935 in Clarendon, Arkansas, to the late Milton McKoy and the late Jewel Talley McKoy Moore, Lea’s southern roots ran deep. She spent her childhood in Clarendon and was a graduate of Holly Grove High School. It was there that she met and married her high school sweetheart, Norman L. Self. She pursued higher education in Conway, Arkansas, and later attended the University of Arkansas. In 1973, she moved to Gulf Breeze, where she planted new roots and became a beloved member of the community for over 50 years.
Lea was a woman of many talents and a vibrant spirit. Her professional life was defined by her desire to help others grow and appreciate beauty. She served as a high school Guidance Counselor, helped shape the poise and etiquette of young people through Junior Cotillion, and shared her artistic eye as the co-owner of a flower shop.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A lifelong member of the PCA church, Lea served faithfully on various committees and was active with both youth and adults. She shared her testimony and wisdom by traveling the state to speak to members of the Christian Women's Club and various churches.
An active and energetic woman, Lea found joy in movement and nature. She was a competitive tennis player and a sharp bridge player. Living on the coast suited her adventurous spirit; she loved snorkeling, fishing, and spent countless hours walking the beach collecting shells. Her talent for flower arranging was a testament to her love for the natural world.
Above all, Lea was the heart of her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her boundless hospitality—Lea always welcomed anyone into her home with open arms. She particularly cherished children, finding her greatest happiness in their laughter, curiosity, and company.
She is survived by her husband of many years, Norman Self; and her two children, Dirk Self and Susan Darling. She also leaves behind a legacy of love in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lea was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her oldest son, Gary Allison Self, with whom she is now joyfully reunited.
