Marge was born Aug. 2, 1926 in the Dover community of Yazoo County, Mississippi. She grew up in Bentonia, MS, attended Anding High School, and graduated in 1944 from historic St. Mary of the Pines girls’ boarding school in Chatawa, MS.
Marge worked briefly at an Army recruiting station in Jackson, MS where she met her husband Jim. They married May 9, 1946 and enjoyed Big Band swing music and dancing as newlyweds. They were married for 59 years before Jim passed away in 2005. Although both Marge and Jim were Mississippi natives, they chose Pensacola as their retirement community after many years of relocating to various US military stations during Jim’s Naval career.
Marge’s greatest joys in life were her family and homemaking. She was the quintessential nurturing mom to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit was very evident in her hobbies as well. She had a “green thumb” with plants of all kinds, especially her beloved African violets. She also enjoyed raising many generations of finches and kept detailed notes on their ancestries. Marge was an accomplished seamstress who made clothing for all of her children. She was a wonderful cook and donated homemade dishes to several ministries as a longtime member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling in her earlier years and was an avid neighborhood walker through her mid-eighties. Marge was still an active member of Holy Spirit’s Prayer Shawl Ministry knitting group before her death. Her positivity and sense of humor were always apparent. Remember her corny “what did the turkey do” joke? There will never be another like her!
Marge was preceded in death by her husband James H. Vinson, infant son James H. Jr., parents, Winnie and Benjamin Brumfield, older brothers Tom and John Brumfield and younger brother Benjamin “Buddy” Brumfield Jr.
She is survived by her daughters Wendy Lamar (Bob) and Patti Wheeler (Terry), sons Chris Vinson (Jodi Mays) and Tom Vinson, grandchildren Rachel Call (Dan), Sarah Lamar, Matt Wheeler (Erin), Sam Wheeler and great grandchildren, Keeli Anderson, Emme Cate McKelvey and Faye Wheeler. Her extended family includes special friends Joyce Yaden, Jo Brown and Cindy Kubitz.
