

Marie Louise Hickerson Byrkit Postell died on January 20, 2016 at the age of 77. She was born and grew up in Granite City, Illinois. From the age of six Marie knew she wanted to be a teacher. To obtain this goal took years due to moving and motherhood. Marie attended Illinois State Normal University in 1957 where she met her first husband, Donald R. Byrkit. She began her teaching career in 1959 in Carol Stream, Illinois teaching second grade. After moving from Illinois to Fort Myers and then to Pensacola, she resumed teaching; this time teaching Pre-K at Episcopal Day School. Marie later accepted a position with the Escambia County, Florida school system teaching Title I and Math at Goulding Elementary School. She would also work as a Primary Resource teacher and as a Pre-K teacher at Lincoln Park Elementary School. Marie attained her B.A. in Education and her Masters degree from the University of West Florida. Marie was raised as an only child after the death of her brother, Donald, but was blessed to have a large family. It made her happy to have the entire family together. She wanted only the best for them and for them all to be healthy and happy.Marie was predeceased by her parents, C. Ray and Edna Hickerson, and her brother Donald Ray Hickerson, her son David Charles Byrkit, step-daughter Terri Lynn Postell, and step-granddaughter Kelly Hill and two husbands, Donald R. Byrkit and James A. Postell, Jr.She is survived by her children, son Steven Byrkit of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter Linda Midkiff of Orlando Florida; step-children Daneene Postell of New Orleans, Louisiana and Wendy Warren of Pensacola, and her four grandchildren: Erica Zimmerman, Rachel Warren, Charles Warren, and Lila Midkiff.Visitation will be held on Friday January 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel. Memorial service will be held Saturday January 30 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Internment will follow.
