Ms. Flowers is survived by her children Margaret Servies (Jim) and Kathy Morrow (Terri); grandchildren Heather Johnson, Jason Servies, and Nick Servies (Christy); great grandchildren Lucas Johnson and Everett Servies; and many beloved nieces and nephews in both the Flowers and Dimmick famlies. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bob) Marion Flowers, brother Earl Dimmick, and sister Jean Strickland. After the death of her husband in 1963, she did not remarry, and was affectionately known as “the third sister” in her husband’s family, the Flowers of Carthage, MS. She was the last surviving member of her generation in both the Dimmick and Flowers immediate family.
Ms. Flowers was born on April 16, 1928, in Clarence, MO, to Carl and Tida Dimmick. After graduating high school, she began her federal civil service career as a secretary with the Naval Training Command at NAS Memphis, TN, in 1948, where she met her husband Bob who was stationed at NAS Memphis. They married in 1950, and began life as a career Navy family, moving every several years to different bases stateside and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, eventually landing in Pensacola, FL, in 1962. After her husband died in 1963, she continued her civil service career of 30 years at NAS Pensacola, retiring in 1989 after 8 years as the Pensacola NAS Public Affairs Officer. She was twice awarded the Superior Civilian Service Award. In honor of her dedication and commitment to the military and civilian communities in Pensacola, the Pensacola Council of the Navy League of the United States awards the Margaret Flowers Civic Award to a deserving enlisted candidate for their volunteer work in the community. This prestigious award is presented at the Military Recognition Day luncheon every year since 1985. The award is named in her honor because she embodied the true esprit de corps of community and social involvement. In addition to the Navy League, Ms. Flowers served on numerous boards in the Pensacola area, including the Advisory Board for WUWF at UWF and the Board of Directors for the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. She earned an Associate of Arts degree from Pensacola Junior College in 1981. She mentored many military and civilian young people, volunteered countless hours to numerous charities, and lived life to the fullest.
Ms. Flowers career was second only to her first love, her family. Through it all, she single-handedly raised two daughters and nurtured close ties to all her family. She was generous in her love and support, never seeking recognition, and always acknowledging others as essential to her success.
A memorial is scheduled for June 5 at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel from 3:00-5:00 pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ms. Flowers’ life. A private funeral will be held at the New Providence Cemetery in Carthage, MS.
