1931 - 2013
Mary Elma (Wilcox) Smith, age 82, died on September 22, 2013. She was born on September 6, 1931 in Cleveland, NY. Her parents were Elmer and Annis Wilcox. Her mother died when Mary Elma was born. Her aunt and uncle, Marie and Leonard Thomas became her guardians and mentors. Her siblings were Clarke and Ann.
Mary Elma married Edward Bailey in 1951. To this union five children were born.
In 1974, Mary Elma met and married F Pitkin Smith. At that time, they moved from Marcellus, NY to Rapid City, SD. There she was a charter member of Black Hills Quilters Guild. She was the first president of the guild to preside for two terms. She ran her own quilting store, Cottage Quilts from 1980 to 1985.
In 1997, she and Pitkin moved to Pensacola, FL. There she was a member of Pensacola Quilters Guild and the Quilter Bees. She had a huge love of her dogs and cats. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma.
Mary Elma was preceded in death by her parents, aunt and uncle, siblings and one grandson.
She is survived by her loving husband F Pitkin; her sons: Edward "Skip" (Liz) Bailey of Rochester, NY; William Bailey of Hilton Head Island, SC; Clarke (Shelby) Bailey of Manchester, NH; her daughters: Barbara (Bob) Degen of Rapid City, SD; Linda Curry of Pensacola, FL. She has 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Rest in peace, Mom. We will miss you.

The visitation will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Thursday, September 26, 2013 from 5pm to 7pm. The funeral service will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, September 27, at 11:30am. Burial will be at Barrancas National Cemetery after the service at 12:30pm. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception following burial at the Homestead Village Community Center 7830 Pine Forest Road, Pensacola, FL 32526 at 2pm.
