After graduating from Lexington High School, where he played football, Nick attended Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). He went on to serve as a Marine Corps pilot for 21 years, with a distinguished career that included numerous deployments, including three tours of duty in Vietnam. As a pilot, he demonstrated not only bravery but also deep care for his fellow servicemen. On one occasion, preparing to fly troops to Vietnam, he discovered they hadn’t been given lunch or meals for the journey. He firmly insisted that command provide the Marines with meals to go, ensuring they were taken care of on the long flight. It was moments like these that reflected Nick’s unwavering dedication to the people he served alongside.
After retiring from active duty, he earned his degree from the University of West Florida and continued his passion for aviation as a flight instructor at Whiting Field. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the ‘Ready Room’ and took pride in training future pilots. Nick was a devoted husband, a protective father, a fantastic uncle, and a steadfast friend. Above all, he embodied the spirit of a Marine — compassionate, honorable, and dedicated.
Nicholas was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Wilese; their dear son, Brian; and his wonderful parents, Frank and Elizabeth Bunch.
