Reverend Norman Lester Schulz

March 10, 1938May 16, 2020

Reverend Norman L. Schulz, 82, of Cantonment, Florida passed away on May 16, 2020.

Norman was born in Holdredge, Nebraska, to Reverend Roy and Elvira Schulz. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Academy, Winfield, Kansas and Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was a graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri where he received his Master of Divinity. He served as a vicar one year at Zion Lutheran Church of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Following graduation from seminary, he was Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Holly Springs, Mississippi and Peace Lutheran Church, Oxford, Mississippi, also serving as campus pastor for Lutheran students for four years at the University of Mississippi. From there he went to St. Stephens Lutheran Church, New Orleans, Louisiana and on to Hope Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Alabama where he served until retirement in 2002.

He was very active in Lutheran Laymen’s League, Kiwanis Club and Lutheran Braille Workers. He loved preaching and teaching. It was his joy to preach God’s love and grace and teach hundreds of Bible Studies. He did it with joy ~ in the name of Jesus Christ and the expectation of developing hope, comfort and peace in people’s lives.

In June of 2019 he celebrated his 55th Anniversary of his Ordination with parishioners of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cantonment, Florida.

Norm (as he was known to friends and family) enjoyed his retirement years traveling, working crossword puzzles, socializing with friends in dinner clubs and being with family as much as possible. Norm was a cheerful giver, benefitting many local and national charitable organizations. Everyone enjoyed Norm’s happy way of going and genial personality. He was a man with a big heart and an even bigger smile … he never met a stranger. Seriously!!

Norm is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Anne Rahn Schulz. Six children: Christoper Schulz of Houston, Texas, Suzanne Robin of Slidell, Louisiana, Linda (Rick) Watson of Belle Isle, Florida, Mark Zechiel of Birmingham, Alabama, Scott (Terri) Zechiel of Fairhope, Alabama and Michael Zechiel of DeBary, Florida, eight Grandchildren and six Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Merle (Marilyn) Schulz of Sterling, Colorado, sister Sandra Pope of Ft. Morgan, Colorado, sister Marcia (Lowell) Schachtsiek of Monroe City, Missouri.

A Memorial Service is being held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2385 County Road 297A, Cantonment, Florida 32533, presided by Reverend Timothy Sowers. A big beautiful smile and open loving heart is what met me as a newly Ordained Pastor in our District, coming from Pastor Schultz. I praise and thank our Lord for allowing me to get to know and love him in that capacity since 1981.

I always remember the kindness that Norm showed me when I first came to Birmingham as a prof at UAB. He invited me to preach and even paved the way for me to serve as his Interim pastor when he was shot. I was most appreciative. In the next decade he supported my ministry at Trinity and was always kind, showing God's love to me and the whole world. it is quite fitting that he passed to heaven in the time between Ascension and Ascension Sunday.

Peace and joy be with you in your journey.
