Pablo “Bobby” Esquivel de Guzman, 77 years old at time of his death on September 29, 2014 in Pensacola, FL. He battled cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and pneumonia. Ultimately he lost some battles, but won the war as he brought all of us here today to celebrate his gift of how to live a great life.
Bobby was born January 25, 1937 in Tinuan (Batangas) in the Republic of the Philippines. He was one of eight children born to Conrado de Guzman and Catalina Esquivel. He is survived by his bride Sheila of 48 years, daughters Carole (husband Keith)/ Debbie, son Richard (wife Becky), five grandchildren (Trenton, Shaun, Chase, Sophia, and Elena), one great-grandchild Makaio, three sisters (Amelita, Nieves, Fidela), one brother (Angel), and extended family and friends.
Bobby was the first child of his family to leave the country to explore other opportunities; like many of you here today. He enlisted in the United States Navy on March 7, 1954 and steamed across the Pacific to an unknown future, but one he knew he would be a fantastic journey. With his drive and determination, he ultimately earned the “khakis” and “anchors” of a Navy Chief Petty Officer. He retired on August 1, 1978 after a 24 year career. After a textured military career, Bobby leveraged his talents in the food and restaurant business and continued his impact to both customers and employees.
Bobby attended many schools, a priority in his culture no matter the socioeconomic level. Legend has it he attended the prestigious University of the Philippines; decided it was not for him and set his sights on exploring the world. The Navy also provided several formal and informal schools. However, the best education he received was from learning from his parents’ work ethic and kindness for other people through good deeds and cooking food for others.
