Raleigh Lawrence Carr passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, Florida on Monday, December 14th, 2020 at the age of 79 of natural causes. He passed peacefully with his long-time neighbor and friend, Judy De Stael at his bedside.
Raleigh was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on May 18th, 1941. Raleigh enlisted in the Navy in 1959, shortly after graduating from high school. He served our nation, both in and out of uniform for 45 years; the first 24 years in the United States Navy from which he retired in 1983 at top of the enlisted ranks with the rating of AFCM (E-9). Raleigh subsequently served 21 years as a Department of the Navy Civil Service worker at the NAS Pensacola Navy Depot level aircraft maintenance facility (NADEP). After the NADEP closed in 1996, Raleigh continued his service at the headquarters of the Commander, Navy Education and Training Command (NETC) from which he retired in 2006. Raleigh was a Vietnam veteran and served on seven aircraft carriers over his 24 year career, several of which were on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam war.
Although baptized a Lutheran, over the past 15 years Raleigh regularly attended Catholic Mass with his neighbors, Jim and Judy, initially at the Aviation Memorial Chapel aboard NAS Pensacola and for the past 7 years at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he was welcomed, loved and respected as a kind and faithful member of the parish.
Raleigh was a long-time supporter of Hospice of Pensacola, St. John the Evangelist Parish and School, and the various charitable causes of the St. John the Evangelist Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Raleigh was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Carr and Hazel (Henningson) Carr, his wife Iris in 2005 and his older brother Harold earlier this year.
Raleigh is survived by his daughter Sandy (Carr) Sheehan of Seabrook, New Hampshire; son Marc Carr of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda Carr of Sartell, Minnesota; sister, Becky (Carr) Jones of Topeka, Kansas and sister-in-law June Carr of North Branch, Minnesota. Raleigh also had two very attentive and well loved nieces, Jodi Carr and Lori Carr, both of whom reside in Minnesota. Raleigh is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Danielle, Jenifer and William and 6 great grandchildren: Ameliah, Gage, Delaney, Sasha, Kenndra and Hayden all of New Hampshire. Raleigh is also survived by his very dear friends Jim and Judy De Stael and Rev Father Mike Garvey.
The date of Raleigh’s inurnment at Barrancas National Cemetery is yet to be determined and will be announced later.
