1931-2017
Ray Avalos, 85, passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2017. Ray was born to Ben Avalos and Guadalupe Avalos on September 29, 1931. He lived in Corpus Christi, Texas until he was 20, at which time he joined the Air Force and served from 1951 until 1955. When he returned home, he worked at his parents’ store until taking a job in 1956 as an apprentice aircraft mechanic at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi. In 1959, he moved to Pensacola, Florida and began working at Pensacola Naval Air Station as an apprentice AMG. Ray retired in 1986 from his Civil Service job at NAS.
Ray married the love of his life, Virginia Fuller, on November 27, 1959. They had 57 years together. Ray and Jenny (Virginia) travelled across the United States on an Amtrak. Ray loved to watch the birds, work in the yard and play cards. He loved to listen to Tijuana Brass music and play his many instruments: clarinet, guitar, piano and harmonica.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Ben, Sr. and Guadalupe Avalos; brothers Alberto and Ben, Jr. and sister Sofia A. Ruiz. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Fuller Avalos; sons: Michael Avalos, Ray (Jacqueline) Avalos, Jr., Greg (Rochelle) Avalos and Terry Avalos; grandchildren: Marcus Avalos, Timothy Avalos, A.J. Avalos, Devin Avalos, Cory Avalos, Christina (Jason) Posey, Kassondra (Ben) Nelson, Kenneth Avalos, Rhiannon Avalos, Rebecca Avalos, Raeleigh Avalos and Christopher Avalos ; great-grandchildren: Logan, Easton and Elayna Avalos, Justina and Bayleigh Posey and Maylene Nelson.
Ray will be deeply missed by his family. Until we see you again, Dad…we love you! The family would like to say thank you to all the caregivers and Hospice helpers who took care of our father when he couldn’t care for himself. You have all been a blessing to Dad and Mom in caring for him. There are too many to name all of you, but you know who you are. Thank you Ken Griffin for the prayers and comfort you provided and the service.
Friends are cordially invited to join the family at a visitation from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, immediately followed by a service.
