Ed was born on August 25, 1955, in Murphy, NC, to loving parents Tommy and Jimmye McNabb. He grew up in Hiawassee, GA, graduating from Towns County High School.
Ed joined the Navy in 1975 and served his country for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. During his military career, he completed multiple deployments aboard the aircraft carriers USS Independence, USS Saratoga, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. As a Navy recruiter Ed guided many new sailors into military service, many of whom became lifelong friends. Ed's dedication, leadership, and warmth left a lasting impact on everyone he served alongside.
Following his military service, Ed earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and worked as an accountant. Later, he embraced his favorite role as a stay-at-home dad.
In 1981, Ed married the love of his life, Rhonda Marshall. Their 43 year marriage was a true partnership, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Rhonda was not only his wife but also his best friend and constant companion. Together, they built a wonderful life, raising four children and cherishing two granddaughters.
Ed loved his family, his country and his golden retrievers, Charley and Max. A sports fan, Ed loved UGA Football, Go Dawgs! and the Atlanta Braves. Some of his favorite pastimes included sneaking in a good nap, enjoying his favorite snacks, and on occasion, winning a board game against Rhonda which was something he never let her forget.
Ed never met a stranger, they were just friends he hadn’t talked to yet. He loved music and always had a song in his heart and a tune in his soul. Music brought him joy and comfort throughout his life
Ed will be remembered for his big heart, sense of humor, unwavering kindness, and the way he made life brighter for those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Jimmye McNabb, and his brother, Randy McNabb. Ed is survived by his wife, Rhonda McNabb; his son, Jess McNabb, and daughter-in-law, Alison Boggs; his daughter, Katie McNabb, and son-in-law, Daniel Henson; his daughter, Sarah Lee, and son-in-law, Ben Lee; and his son, Sam McNabb, and his granddaughters, Keegan and Madison. He also leaves behind his sister, Sherry Wassmann, and a big circle of extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 19, at 11:30 am at Woods Grove Baptist Church in Young Harris, GA. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Woods Grove Baptist Church.
