Rufus G. Akery

Beloved Husband, Father, Papa, Uncle, Best Friend & mentor passed away Friday April 3rd, 2015 He was surrounded by the love of his life and wife of 32 years Cheryl Akery, his adored and cherished oldest daughter Heather Konecny, son in law Paul Konecny, and Rebecca Akery, his youngest daughter who was the apple of his eye. His brother and best friend, Mickey Wright and wife Helen were also with him. Rufus leaves behind five grandchildren. They are Taylor Young who he loved deeply, Jacob Young who he loved for his heart of gold, Avah Young who always made him smile, Conner Akery AKA little Rufus, and Abigail Konecny who kept his spirits up. He is preceded in death by his father John Rufus Akery, his mother Lucille Williamson Akery, his brother Tony Akery, and sister Margie McDaniel. He is also survived by his sisters Shirley Nixon, Dorothy Ashley, Joyce Dickey (Chan Dickey), Patricia Akery and Janet Mitchell. Other family members include his dearly loved New Orleans family. They are Melody Tegtmeier, Daniel and Sydnie Bordes (Marissa, Brielle, Preston), David & Stacie (Wade, Candice, Cassidy, Caylie, Caiden), and Steven & Sondra Cantin (Ryder, Tye). He also leaves behind many friends and loved ones.

Rufus proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and received a purple heart during his service to his country.

A celebration of Rufus’s life will be held Sunday, April the 12th, at Bayview Fisher – Pou, 3351 Scenic Highway, Pensacola, FL. The visitation will be at 11 a.m. The Celebration of his Life will begin at 12 noon.

The family wishes to thank Covenant Hospice, Dr. Owera, Dr. Ahmed, the staff at West Florida Hospital, and the staff at the Woodlands for giving us more time with him.
