Sara Rebecca Heartsell Schmitt passed away on October 27, 2017, she was 87. Sara was born on July 4, 1930, to James and Eula Heartsell. Sara is survived by one sister, Martha Fox, and predeceased by her parents, brothers, and two sisters. She was the widow of Wilbur William Schmitt, to whom she was married for 38 years until his death in 1988. She predeceased two daughters Ramona Conner, and Catherine Schmitt, and one son William Schmitt. She is survived by her daughters Janice York Conner, Marsha Bullock, Sheila Foy, Karen Watson, and Laura Sommers and son, Leonard Schmitt. Sara is also survived by 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, a few great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Sara was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and after falling for a sailor from New York, William Schmitt, she traveled from Rock Hill, South Carolina to where ever the military sent them. That small town woman traveled to Germany, Hawaii, and all over the U.S. In the 1950s and 1960s Sara drove from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast and back again in an old station wagon with nine children in the back and just enough money for gas and food. She would pull up stakes and move her family more times than I can count and to more states than I can remember, often times alone with just her children. Those trips like the life we lived with Sara was a wild and crazy ride filled with tears and laughter. But to people who just knew her as Sara, she was a quite woman with a strong determination to take care of her husband and children. To the “Three Amigos” that befriended her 13 years ago at the assisted living facility, she will always be the one that made their life there seem like home. And finally one of the last outings we had together was at the Pensacola State Fair, October 2016. I just wanted to drive by and let her experience the sounds, and smells of something familiar to us all, But as you can see by the picture…that wasn’t enough, we had one more ride. Sara will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL 32506, (850) 453-2321.
