

Vernon Lee Olberding, 84, went home to the Lord on September 10, 2014 in Pensacola, FL. He was born on January 6, 1930 to John H. and Hulda Godferson Olberding. He joined the Navy in January, 1948, serving 20 years and rising to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer before retiring. He worked with the earliest computer systems used by the US Navy, writing advancement exams. He continued to serve the country in Civil Service until he retired from government service in 1985.
Vernon and Elaine, his wife of 63 years, were avid square dancers and operated several square dance related businesses over 35 years. He loved Pensacola, being a long term resident, but also enjoyed traveling the United States in their motor home.
He is survived by his beloved wife Elaine, daughter Marcy O. Barnhart(Rick) of Montgomery, AL, Kathy Heineken of Pensacola, FL, and son Gary L. Olberding of Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren, Catherine, Erik, Jonathan (Jen), Jenny (Isaac), Elizabeth and Michael; great-grandchildren Vivien, Oscar, and Eliana; and sister Marion Klein. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Hulda Olberding; brothers Clem, Paul, and John; and sister Monica.
Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel of Pensacola, FL. Viewing will be at 11:30 with services following at 12:30. Services will be officiated by his son-in-law, Rev. Rick Barnhart. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery on the Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, following the service.
