Anna was born September 25, 1926 in a small rural town in Bavaria outside of Munich, Germany. She spent her childhood on the family farm. From modest means, Anna attended a vocational high school, where she mastered household skills including cooking, gardening and sewing.
She and her family survived Hitler’s Germany. Just after WWII, when there was little economic opportunity, a German aunt living in Peoria sponsored her immigration to the United States. At 25, she came to this country, adopted it as her own and became a U.S. citizen.
She is survived by nieces and nephews living in Germany and cousins in Peoria: Gertrude Krisman, George (Mildred) Lamprecht and Rosemary (and Don) Swanson.
She was passionate about and highly accomplished in cooking, sewing, knitting, needlework and gardening. She enjoyed classical music and loved animals, caring for many pets over the years and rescuing strays.
She lived with two Peoria families. First with the Arnold and Ann Salzenstein family and then with the Robert and Esther Cohen family. Anna became the live-in support system for those families. Each family adopted her as their own. Altogether, she helped raise 8 children who maintained a close relationship with her.
She was active in the community for several decades, volunteering for Wildlife Prairie Park, the Opera, Symphony, projects for the YWCA, the Peoria Art Guild, Garden Club, St. Thomas Church and knitting clothing for the infants at OSF Hospital.
She was a long-time member of St. Thomas Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home, St. Thomas Church, T.A.P.S. or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum, 7519 Allen Road in Peoria, Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:30 am.
