Obituary of Betty Shirley Congress
Betty Congress passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 7th, 2022 in Dallas,TX. Betty was born in Peoria, Illinois on July 9th, 1929 to Oscar and Freda (Dennison) Finkelstein. She married Joseph (Bob) Congress in Peoria on February 5th, 1950. Betty received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. She was a member of Agudas Achim synagogue and also a life member of Hadassah and B’nai Brith. She was a volunteer at Lakeview Museum and for the Cancer Society. Betty and her husband operated Lloyd’s Jewelers for many years and started the fine jewelry departments in Bergner’s Department Stores. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Herman Finkelstein, her sisters Goldye Schwartz and Minnie Brown, all of Peoria. Betty is survived by her son Dr. Howard Congress and his wife Janet of Rancho Mirage, CA, and by her two daughters: Mrs. David (Nancy) Bass and her husband of Boca Grande, FL, and Mrs. Paul (Amy) Wendt and her husband of Dallas, TX. She is survived by her grandchildren Marisa Bass, Jennifer Bass, Audra Congress, Hunter Congress, and Stephanie Wendt, and by her great-grandchildren Griffin Hampton Bass and Aldus Bass-Hasan. Service will be Wednesday, May 11th at 10:00am at the Peoria Hebrew Cemetery in West Peoria. Donations may be made to the Jewish Federation of Peoria, Congregation Agudas Achim or the Cancer Center - Healthy Living.
