Betty Lou Welch

Betty Lou Martin Welch passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and service. She lived a full and joyful life centered on family, lifelong friendships, and helping others.

Born on December 28, 1928, in Dixon, IL, Betty was the oldest child of Harold E. Martin and Gladys Elizabeth Hoyle Martin. She grew up in Dixon, IL and Beloit, WI, where she treasured childhood adventures with friends, summers spent swimming and riding bicycles, and the values of hard work and community that would shape her life.

After graduating from Beloit High School, Betty worked for Freeman Shoe Corporation and Tekni-Craft before marrying the love of her life, Bill Welch, on November 10, 1951. Their marriage of more than sixty years was filled with love, laughter, travel, and unwavering devotion until Bill's passing in 2012.

Together they raised three children, Sue, David, and Mary Beth. She embraced being a stay-at-home mom, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, den mother, and room mother, always giving generously of her time.

Throughout her life, Betty remained active in her church and her community. She volunteered at Methodist Hospital in Peoria, Holmes Regional Hospital and the King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, FL. Betty was a Hallmark lady for more than 18 years in both Melbourne, FL & Peoria. She also enjoyed playing bridge, community theater, bowling, dancing, and spending winters in Florida performing in local shows with Bill. They loved to dance, and they were good at it too…people would stop to watch them.

Betty and Bill shared a passion for travel that took them throughout the United States and around the world. They visited all fifty states and created treasured memories everywhere they went, with Alaska remaining one of their favorite destinations.

Those who knew Betty will remember her warm smile, deep faith, and genuine kindness. She had a gift for making friends wherever she lived and remained grateful throughout her life for the many blessings she enjoyed.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Sue (late partner, Julie Koch), David (Kerri), Mary Beth (Kurt); her grandchildren, Matt, Nate (Rather), Kyle (Jamie), and Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Willabel, Lumi, Tyler, Abbie, and Elizabeth; her sister, Nancy (Alvin), and brother, Dick (late wife, Judy); extended family; and dear friends.

In one of the final reflections she wrote about her life, Betty shared the words that best captured her spirit:

"I'm so grateful for my three wonderful children and their families."

Her life was a beautiful example of love, service, faith, and gratitude. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Her wishes regarding her service were that she wanted people to have a good time, so we will try to honor that. Her service will be on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at United Presbyterian Church, 2400 W Northmoor Rd, Peoria, IL 61614. Informal visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 am, service at 11:00 am followed by lunch at the church for those who would like to stay and enjoy with the family.
