

Calvin "Pop" Montgomery, 70, of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born on September 21, 1952 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, a son of Odell Montgomery and Ollie (Blackman) Montgomery. Calvin married Girtha Burton on August 2, 1980 in Peoria. She preceded him in death on August 5, 2013 in Peoria. They were married for 33 years.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one adopted son; one brother; and one sister.
Calvin is survived by his biological children; his children by marriage and their spouses; one adopted son; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.
He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a fireman apprentice and in damage control as a hull technician from 1971 to 1977.
Calvin last worked as a welder and assemblyman for Caterpillar, Inc. He previously worked for IDOT as a highway maintenance supervisor.
He was a member of the Star of Hope Full Gospel Church in Peoria, where he was an usher. Calvin enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, darts, card games, cartoons, and Western movies. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a member of the Christian Motorcyclist Association. He and Girtha were foster parents for 15 years. They adopted 2 children from foster care.
Calvin's funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Star of Hope Full Gospel Church in Peoria. Bishop Joseph Johnson will officiate. His visitation will be from 9:00 am to 10:00 am also on Tuesday at his church. Burial will take place in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria with full military honors.
