Carol was born on Nov. 11, 1940 in Peoria. Daughter of Pearl Hieronymus, Carol was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. She married Stanley Arthur Stewart on Dec. 5, 1959. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1999.
Carol is survived by her two children, Gregory (Kelly) Stewart of Peoria and Lynette Stewart of Bartonville, who took great care of her mom until her dying breath. Three grandchildren, Chandler (Jeremy Chambers) Stewart, Hannah Stewart, Logan Stewart; and two great-grandchildren, Jayce Chambers and Bailee Chambers, each of whom she loved with all her heart.
Perhaps Carol’s greatest pleasure was helping others. She was dubbed “Saint Carol” by her daughter-in-law for her truly selfless nature and complete willingness to help anybody, anytime. Carol spent countless hours caring both for her sisters in their later years and her grandkids and great-grandkids in their early years.
And Carol was a tireless worker. She spent most of her working years in the banking business, starting as a teller and working her way up to manager at financial institutions such as Home Federal, River Valley and South Side Bank. She also worked for Home Insurance, Hiram Walker, JC Penney and Pleasant Valley Middle School, as well as holding volunteer positions as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Peoria Evening Optimists Club and the Peoria Youth Hockey Association.
Carol graduated with distinction from Peoria High School in 1957, then married Stanley two years later. They waited nearly a decade to start a family, and both spoke fondly of their many adventures during their roaring 20s. In what little “me time” she had, Carol loved to play cards of any kind. She was a founding member of the “Wednesday Night Card Club” that formed in 1973 and still meets to this day.
Those ladies, and the many family members and friends who were fortunate to know Carol, are invited to her service on Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the service at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. A graveside service will follow at Lutheran Cemetery, where Carol will join Stan for eternity.
