

He was born Sept. 14, 1927 in Dubuque, IA to Aloysius and Otilia (Roth) Fangman. He attended Holy Ghost Church where he served as an altar boy. He graduated from Holy Ghost grade school and attended and graduated from Dubuque High School in 1945. He joined the Army in 1945 and was in the 9th Infantry Division – ETO.
After being discharged he attended Denver University, graduating in 1951. He married Dorothy Ryan in 1951 in Dubuque, IA. He began his career at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria in 1951, and retired as Vice President of Research and Engineering in 1992 after 42 years of service. He held positions in Research and Product Engineering, was Chief Engineer at the East Peoria Plant, Director of Worldwide Engineering, and has many patents in his name.
Dorothy Fangman preceded him in death in 1977. In 1980 he married Jacqueline Schilling. She survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Victoria (Robert) Scott of Peoria, Karen Grimm of San Jose, CA; 3 grandchildren, Rachel Scott, Chas Grimm and Caitlin Grimm; 3 step sons, Jeff (Bonnie) Schilling, Dan (Kim) Schilling and Scott (Teresa) Schilling; 1 step daughter, Kris (Tony) Dinkins; 7 step grandchildren, Doug Schilling, Gregg Schilling, Jennifer Hendrickson, Jessa Dinkins, Piper Trotter, Joshua Schilling and Jarod Schilling; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marian; brother, Roger; and great-grandson, Lucas.
He was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, an honorary life member of Mt. Hawley Country Club where he played golf with The Squires. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Peoria. He loved gardening, reading about history, and especially being with his family.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Peoria. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
