He was born on August 24, 1944 in Springfield, Illinois to Dale and Alberta Altig.
He married Luretha Scrimager on May 24, 1985 in East Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Milessa (Dale) Cronkhite of Washington, IL; five grandchildren, Zachary (Jessica) Cronkhite, Noah James, Nathan Cronkite, Nicoli Bush and Connor Cronkhite; one brother, Bob (Beverly) Altig of Latham, IL; one sister, Roberta Barlow of Bloomington, IL; one sister in law, Dee Altig of Columbus, OH and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jim Altig; one daughter, Monica Harkness; and two brothers, Paul Altig and Gary Altig.
Butch worked as a machinist at Caterpillar until his retirement in 2000. Butch loved having breakfast with his retired friends, camping, fishing, playing pool, but most of all loved to spend time with his family.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service with military honors will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 10 a.m. Pastor Jack Thompson will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
