He was born March 17, 1937 in Henry, IL to Noah and Meta (Renken) Wertz. He married Sandra Parkinson on May 3, 1963. She survives
Also surviving are their four children, Todd Wertz of Waverly, TN, Troy (Barb) Wertz, Megan Wertz and Morgan Wertz all of Peoria; five grandchildren, Jordan and McKenna Wertz, Isaac Empson, Noah and Sarah Wertz; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Simmons, Annabelle Wertz, Zaria and Zendaya Barrett; seven siblings, Helena Shallean, Elizabeth Dyer, John Wertz, Frieda Stroyreck, Kenneth Wertz, Carol Delay, and Sarah Wertz and a sister-in-law, Diane Shell Wertz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Tyrena Wertz and a brother, Charles Wertz.
Don worked as a Selective Inventory Controller for Caterpillar, Inc for 37 1/2 years before retiring in 1992. He then worked for over 27 years as a Groundskeeper at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Peoria. Don was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the St. Paul's Men's Club, a past member of the UAW Local 974, and proudly donated over 97 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Don enjoyed hunting, woodworking, leather working and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was very involved with his children, with the Christian Center and Peoria Christian School.
A private family service will be Monday, March 1, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Peoria. The service will be simultaneously broadcast on channel 103.1 for those wishing to attend via drive in service. Burial will follow the service at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
