He was born on September 23, 1947, in Peoria to Edward and Emily (Anderson) Smith Sr. He married Margaret "Peggy" Thompson on August 12, 1967, in Peoria. She preceded him in death in 2000. Also preceding him in were death two brothers, James and Gary Smith; and one brother-in-law, Ivan Colvin.
Surviving are his four children, Dan (Margaret) Smith of Canton, Regina Burgett of Canton and Coral (David) Nichols of Yates City; Jim (Kim) Bush whom he raised; four siblings, Connie Colvin of Mapleton and Pat (Marvin) Welk, Ruth Burnette and Karen (Greg) Jones, all of Peoria; and sisters-in-law, Linda Smith of Peoria Heights and Judy Smith of Bartonville. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Dustin Merry, Dennis "DJ" Burgett Jr., Cody (Amy) Burgett, Amanda (Taurean) Nelson, Shelbey, Trista, Kylie and Tryce Nichols, Naomi Baker, Jeannie Hamilton and Sylvia Bush; five great-grandchildren, Zander, Elania, Harmonie, Hannah and Alexander; and his beloved pets, Angel, Piper and Buck.
Eddie served in the U.S Army and was a Cell Operator at Caterpillar, Inc., retiring in 2000. He was a longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Peoria and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Eddie was a former scout leader of Troop #147 and enjoyed fishing, collecting Elvis memorabilia and Eagles, spending time with his family and was an avid Cubs and wrestling fan.
A visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. A funeral mass will be on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at 10 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in West Peoria. A celebration of life will be at a later date.
