Griff was one of my pals in high school. We met at CornStock Theater and were among a group of peers from different schools that hung out together (Griff, me, Bob, Donald, Stauske, and our friend Jeff, who was a few years older but like an older brother. Even then, we thought school rivalries were stupid. Griff had a tough childhood and sought ways to stand out. We were in the singing group, Great Expectations, from ‘79-‘80. Like me, he was a student of the piano and showed interest in songwriting. He once showed me the beginning of a song he had started that he didn’t know what to do with; I really liked it and asked him if I could do something with it. I wrote an entire song called “Dreams Never End,” which was the first line of the song he had started.  His chords had a melancholy feel, so I stayed with that feel and created a McCartney-esque medley of a song I’d already written called “Blues On A Sunday”. The song appears on my 2010 CD of original songs, The Light Of Day.” 

We saw each other after high school just once, at CornStock Theater. He and I were there to see a show and met up afterward with a few friends. As is typical with old friends, we picked up right where we left off. And as always, Griff had that throaty laugh that seemed like he wanted to keep it in but just couldn’t! He was a gentle soul. 

May the angels lead you to paradise, and may you rest in the arms of Jesus, my friend. ✝️

We just got word of Griff’s death. My wife and I have known Griff through Anshai Emeth for a number of years. I have known his family through local theatre for decades. May Griff’s memory be a blessing to you all.
