Hedy C. Stone

Hedy was born December 22nd 1937, to Sidney & Sally (Brilliant) Cole in Chicago. She married Gordon Stone in Chicago on June 28th 1959.

Hedy is survived by her children: Joel (Jackie) Stone, Sally (Glen) Williams, and daughter in law Tammy Daniels. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rebecca Stone, Grant (Bree) Stone, Sydney Williams, John Williams, Melissa (Jason) Foerster, Jacob Stone, Olivia Stone, and Cassie Stone. Also surviving are six adored great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Mark, and brother Ben Cole.

Hedy grew up in Chicago and then attended Bradley University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1959 with a degree in Education. She was a proud Bradley alum and basketball supporter for over 70 years.

In spite of urging from her father to become an engineer and take over the family business, she chose education as her calling, teaching for over 30 years in the Peoria area. She started teaching at Trewyn School in 1959 and then took a 10 year hiatus to raise her children. She followed that up at St. Boniface School and Calvin Coolidge. Hedy was an accomplished teacher, being voted by her peers in 1990 to be one of the top 10 teachers in the Tri-County area. She also was voted a top teacher in the state of Illinois in 1997 and was a candidate for Teacher of the Year. She was a life-long learner and educator, becoming an Adjunct Professor at Bradley upon retirement and taking continuing education classes into her late 80’s. She was also an avid supporter and attendee of the Heartland Festival Orchestra.

Faith was also a big part of Hedy’s life. She was actively involved in Temple Anshai Emeth, President of the Temple Sisterhood, Principal of the Religious School, and involved in some capacity in nearly all committees and activities over her time in Peoria.

Her greatest joy in life though, was her family. She was there for her kids and grandkids, unconditionally with love and advice. From attending her children’s sporting events when they were kids, to doing the same for her grandchildren, there was no event she would not attend. She cherished spending time with her family, and would light up around her 6 great grandchildren. She will be missed beyond words.

Visitation will be 10-11 AM Wednesday, followed by funeral service July 8th at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Rabbi Bryna Milkow will officiate. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery, Peoria.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Anshai Emeth or Heartland Festival Orchestra.
