She was born on September 24, 1948, in Chiayi, Taiwan, where she eventually met and married her husband Ching Hsu. In 1973, Ching emigrated to the United States, and a few years later Hsiu left the life she knew in Taiwan to join him as they built a new future together for their family.
Hsiu dedicated herself to creating a home where her family could thrive. As a stay-at-home mother, she worked tirelessly to raise her children with strong values, resilience, and a determination to succeed. She held high expectations and believed that hard work and perseverance were among life’s greatest lessons. The opportunities her children and grandchildren enjoy today are part of the legacy of the sacrifices she made.
She was happiest tending to her garden, preparing homemade Chinese meals that family and friends often said rivaled their favorite restaurants, and sharing stories that always brought laughter and smiles. She loved shopping—especially at TJ Maxx and Marshalls—and had an uncanny ability to find the best bargains.
Although she was known for being strong and steadfast, Hsiu had a softer side that shined brightest with her grandchildren. She adored them beyond measure, spoke proudly of their accomplishments to anyone who would listen, and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them. They brought her endless joy and were the light of her life.
Hsiu will be remembered for her strength, unwavering devotion to her family, infectious storytelling, generous spirit, and genuine kindness. She touched the lives of many through her warmth, humor, and authenticity. Her memory will continue to live on in the family she loved so deeply.
She is survived by her husband, Ching; her children, Kai (Valerie) Hsu, Sindy (Jim) Duncan, and Tony Hsu; her grandchildren, Nick Duncan, Brooke Duncan, and Keaton Hsu; and many extended family members in Taiwan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Caitlin Clark Foundation in her honor. Although Hsiu was never much of a sports fan, she became an enthusiastic Caitlin Clark fan and watched every Indiana Fever game this past season. She found inspiration in Caitlin's resilience, often relating to Caitlin's injuries and recovery. After her last hospitalization, her first attempt to sit up was to watch Caitlin play.
