He was also preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, David, Ralph, Irvin, Carl, James, and George; and three sisters, Marie, Ruth, and Florence; and one grandson, Alex Barth. His father, David August Hoerr, the son of German immigrants, began delivering topsoil in his truck and doing other landscaping jobs in 1926. The business continues the family tradition today under the third generation. John developed the Hardy Turf sod business in the early 1970's. His stone and masonry work is found all throughout the Peoria area. John was a member of Peoria Apostolic Christian Church and served his church as a Sunday School teacher, trustee, and Berean Prison Ministry volunteer at the Peoria County Jail. He also was a charter board member of Gateway Woods Children's Home and served on mission trips to Mexico and Haiti with Apostolic Christian Harvest Call. He would want all to know, "I love you and I want you to be in heaven with me so that we can have all the time to talk. Please ask Jesus into your heart. It's not about a church or a religion, but a relationship with Jesus that can be started today". He loved the Bible verse, John 10:10 for the true and abundant life one can have in Christ.
