He was born May 30, 1940 in Peoria, to Edward and Dorothy (Helgoth) McHugh. He married Kathleen Atkinson on February 12, 1966 in Peoria. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2001. His parents also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his two sons, Steve (Lorrie) McHugh of Germantown Hills and Dan (Angela) McHugh of Michigan; five grandchildren, Kayla, Cory, Joshua, Nathan and Shorena; four siblings, Roger (Pat) McHugh of Metamora, Marcia Aaron of Texas, Raymond (Sandy) McHugh of Nevada, and Donna (Frank) Franzonia of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews.
John served in the U.S. Coast Guard and worked as a Pipefitter for O'Brien Brothers until he retired in 2000. He was a member of Steamfitters Local #353. John enjoyed gardening, cooking, target shooting, metal and woodworking. He was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family. John will be remembered for his sense of humor and for always having a joke to tell.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
