

Lowell Lawrence Fischer, 89, of Peoria, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 2, 2016 at Heddington Oaks in West Peoria. Born on Christmas Day 1926 in Peoria, IL to John and Eleanora (Benazet) Fischer; he married Norma Morris on May 11, 1952 in Peoria and she preceded him in death on November 29, 2003. Also preceding in death were his daughter Gloria and sister, Mussette Hecht. Surviving are his daughters, Marty-Jo (Kal) Ensor of Hohenwald, Tenn. and Lisa (Ken) Kauffman of Summertown, Tenn.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Lowell served honorably in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS LST 1105 in the Pacific Theater. He was honored and thrilled to have participated in the Honor Flight program in 2010, which he attended with a shipmate. “Fischer”, as he was called by his fellow firefighters, enjoyed a long career with the Peoria Fire Department and retiring as Chief in 1977. After retirement he served in security at the Hiram Walker Distillery until its closure. He was a dedicated member of the Mohammed Shrine in Peoria serving as the 2000 Commander of the Mohammed Legion of Honor, as well as Abbas Grotto and was also a member of Peoria Elks Lodge #20. He and Norma were also past members of the Peoria Boat Club, where they kept their house boat in the early 1980’s. Lowell learned a love of baking from his mother and always enjoyed baking pies and cooking for dinners at his fraternal organizations. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Robert DeBolt will officiate. Burial will follow at Parkview Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
