Nancy Ann Salzer passed away comfortably at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home at 3:24 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Constantly and faithfully beside her bed during her illness in the hospital, as well as the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home was her husband of nearly sixty years, Phil Salzer.
Born in Bloomington, Illinois on June 12, 1941, she was raised as an only child since a preceding brother was born earlier but passed away three days later in the hospital. Her mother and father, Sheldon and Lorene (Pindell) Hankey also preceded her in death. Both parents made an enjoyable and wonderful life for her.
As a youngster growing up on the West side of Bloomington, she liked going to camp each summer at Lake Bloomington, visiting the public library, and attending youth activities at First Christian Church.
Working in the family grocery store, she became well acquainted with sacking groceries. As a young person she was recognized as one of the best. Later on in life, Nancy might be seen holding up a line at the major chain grocery store re-sacking her groceries when she didn’t like how they were done. Another aspect of her life she picked up in the store was her love for travel. On Saturdays, they would close the store at noon and take a short vacation. Throughout her life she would eventually travel to over 100 countries with friends. She also traveled extensively throughout the U.S. with her husband.
Graduating in the last Bloomington High School class from downtown, she earned her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from Illinois State Normal University. She started her teaching career at Moore High School in Farmer City. She next moved back to ISNU to be the director of a girls’ dormitory on the west side of campus called Haynie Hall. Moving to Peoria, she spent 8 years at Bradley University in admissions, financial aid, and counseling. Settling into her final position before retirement, Nancy finished her career at Washington High School as a counselor and instructor in psychology and physical education.
Always professional in her standards of counseling, she was recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors as a National Certified Counselor.
A die hard Yankee and Packer fan, she stayed with winners.
Nancy is survived by her husband, several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as a travel companion and best friend, Sharon Bennington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Rev. Steve Barch will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. on Wednesday also at the funeral home.
