Nicholas Johnson, 69, of East Peoria, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 12, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born October 11, 1948 in Peoria, IL to William and Virginia (Mercer) Johnson. He married Pamela Mueller March 22, 1969 in Peoria.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, William Johnson and his sister-in-law, Randi Capps.

Surviving are his wife, Pamela of East Peoria; his mother, Virginia of Peoria; two children, Erika Roiger of East Peoria and Andrew (Gretchen) Johnson of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Brenden Kirby Roiger, Elizabeth Grace Roiger and DrewAnne Estella Johnson; two sisters, Judith Burgett of Brimfield and Barbara (Robert) Hagemeier of Germantown Hills; one brother, Douglas Johnson of Peoria Heights and several nieces and nephews.

Nick graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from SIUC. He worked for Caterpillar for 35 year, last as an IT Consultant, before retiring in 2009. Nick's work took him all over the world, from Dyersburg, TN to South Africa, Japan, Russia, Australia and all over Europe. From a young age Nick was always interested in astronomy. He enjoyed spending time with his nephew Mark participating in activities with Peoria Astronomical Society, where he served as Parliamentarian and was a chairperson for the Northmoor Observatory in Peoria. Nick was also on the Harbor Pointe Homeowners Association Board as the Director of Property and Maintenance.

One of the highlights of Nick’s life was watching the solar eclipse at his son’s home in Carbondale last August. He always enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as watching his grandchildren participate in their activities, asking them the three things they learned in school that day, and delivering doughnuts to them as the “Doughnut Man”. He often mentioned he also enjoyed reading the daily obituaries and crossing names out of the phonebook. He had a dry and offbeat sense of humor.

Cremation will be accorded and a celebration of life will be Monday, March 19, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm at the Riverfront Museum in Peoria. Davison-Fulton-Woolsey-Wilton is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Peoria Astronomical Society, P.O. Pox 10111, Peoria, IL 61612 . Words of comfort can be shared with the family at www.woolsey-wilton.com.

Nick was a friend from grade school and my next door neighbor for more than a decade. We shared some of the same enthusiasms for photography, astronomy, science, nature, and quirky humor. We were on the Harbor Pointe HOA Board together for a number of years, and his contributions were seen by all of us as thoughtful, well-researched, and kindly spoken. Harbor Pointe will never be the same without him. Community spirit and celebration of seasons were his hallmarks. I can't pass by "Nick's Tree" (the pine near the entrance he put lights on every year) without choking up.

Jayne and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Pam and the entire family. I had the pleasure (and fun) of working with Nick and for him for 6 years. Nick was one of the nicest and most witty persons I have had the pleasure to meet - he truly was a joy to be around. Not only was he an excellent mentor and teacher, but a trusted friend as well. He will truly be missed.

When I heard the news about Nick's passing, I was really shocked. At first I could hardly believe it. I too am a member of the Peoria Astronomical Society, and we both shared many fine memories. The one that stands out the most was that Nick made it possible for me to witness the August total solar eclipse in Carbondale. While at the event I had the previledge of meeting Nick's family - what fine people. To this day I still have that event freshly in my mind, and I will always have Nick in my mind when I recall that event!! My prayers go out to Nick's family.

It is with a very heavy heart I am writing this message. I just found out that earlier in the week we lost a wonderful human being. I unfortunately am out of the country until next week. Words can’t describe how sad my family is feeling for the Johnson family. We have known this family for 25 years. Every meeting with Nick was always a delightful time from referring each other new restaurants to comparing notes on travels around the world. Our thoughts and prayers will be continuous throughout this difficult time for the family but always have the comfort of knowing that Nick was a special man who touched a lot of lives in a very positive manner. Again the Ranson family will have the Johnson family in our prayers.

I am just so shocked and saddened by Nicks passing! I work at his dental office and he has been a joy for me to see over the last 15 yrs!! I have always loved his sense of humor and our silly talks. He was such a blessing to me as a patient- he always brought in a cute little toy for my daughter anytime he was in and she looked forward to his gifts- he was always so thoughtful❤️- i will miss seeing his face- prayers to you all for healing- heaven gained a wonderful angel.

Nick was a friend that was always doing things for people and never wanting anything in return. He never hesitated when asked to do something special for someone. We enjoyed his company and Pam's during many excursions around Peoria looking for out-of-the way places to have a meal and Nick took us to many. We shared some common interests and always could talk about them. He was fun to be around and did so much for our HOA in Harbor Pointe. He will be truly missed. We feel the same about Pam and pass on our thoughts and prayers to her, her children, and grandchildren.

We cannot express enough our heartache and sympathy for Nick’s family. We have always enjoyed our times with all of you and we will forever miss Nick being a part of it. He made us laugh, made us think and question, and we always walked away feeling good about our time with him and his family. You all were blessed to have had him as your father, husband, son, brother, uncle- and we were blessed to have him as our friend.
