

He was born August 13, 1932, in Peoria, IL to Ralph E. and Virginia M. Gauwitz Berg. He married Carla I. Shaw on September 13, 1953, in Peoria.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, one daughter, Connie (Steve) Shultz of Peoria, and one son, Dennis R. (Laurie) Berg of Morton, IL., two grandsons, Derrick (Amanda) Berg of Morton and Zachary Berg of Morton; two granddaughters, Ashley (Paul) Dodd of East Peoria; Sarah Berg of Morton; one step granddaughter and one step grandson and two step great grandsons, all of Peoria. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Delores Berg of East Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Richard (Dick) of East Peoria, IL.
Bob was a graduate of Woodruff High School, in the class of 1950. He enjoyed fishing trips to Wisconsin with his family. He was an avid Bradley basketball fan and season ticket holder.
Bob was also a graduate of the Carpenter Trade School in 1954. He was a carpenter for Fred Harber & Sons while in trade school and for many years to come; working on the YMCA building downtown when he was married in 1953.
When Bob was 23 years of age he built a home for his wife & new baby girl; all in his spare time! He & Carla lived in that home for 48 years before moving to Lutheran Hillside Village in 2003.
Bob went to work for Caterpillar in 1968; working most of his time there in the “Carpenter shop”. He retired from Caterpillar in 1993 after 25 years of service.
He was a member of University United Methodist Church since 1958.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at his church. University United Methodist Church; 2818 N. University Street, Peoria, IL. Rev. Paul Arnold will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:30. Entombment will be at American Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to his church or to Lutheran Hillside Village Foundation.
