Shaun Newell, beloved father and husband, respected journalist, devoted mentor, community leader and enthusiastic advocate, passed away on September 29, 2025, at the age of 47 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him and in the communities he served with quiet and steady dedication.
On January 28, 1978, Shaun was born to Michael “Spider” and Judith Newell in Jacksonville, IL. Shaun was a son whose integrity and compassion were evident from an early age. So were his sense of humor and his contagious laugh. He carried those important qualities into every chapter of his life, as a husband, father, friend, and mentor.
Shaun married his best friend and the love of his life, Amanda Bergschneider, on May 28, 2005, in Franklin, IL. Their partnership was one of deep love, mutual respect, and shared purpose. Together, they created a life and family filled with laughter, resilience, and unwavering support for one another. He was a devoted father to Elliott (11) and Meredith (8). Shaun was endlessly proud of his children. They were his greatest joy, his fiercest motivation, and—on occasion—his most humbling critics. He often said that being their dad was the best job he ever had, and he meant it.
Shaun received his bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Western Illinois University and his master’s degree in business administration from Bradley University. He was the General Manager and Vice President of WMBD/WYZZ-TV in Peoria, a subsidiary of NexStar Media Group Inc. He also served as the news director at the station. Earlier in his professional life, he worked at the Center for Prevention of Abuse, WEEK-TV, WMBD Radio and WLDS/WEAI Radio in Jacksonville, IL.
Shaun and Amanda moved to the Peoria area soon after they married with the anticipation of leaving once she was done with school. However, they quickly realized their passion for Central Illinois, most notably the people. Shaun built a distinguished career in journalism, where his commitment to truth and fairness shaped the stories he told and the lives he touched. He believed in the power of words to illuminate, to challenge, and to heal. His mentorship of younger journalists was generous and enduring.
Beyond the newsroom, Shaun served on the board of directors for the Center for Prevention of Abuse spending the last three years as President of the Board. He brought empathy, vision, and tireless energy to the cause, helping to expand services, raise awareness, and ensure that every survivor was met with dignity and hope. Shaun was a proud and active member of the Rotary Club of Peoria North and The Dirksen Congressional Center, and he served on advisory boards for the Illinois Children’s Hospital and Easter Seals. He was active with the Illinois Broadcasters Association and was recently selected as Broadcaster of the Year.
Shaun was an avid St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys, and WWE fan. Shaun’s love of sports was contagious, as his family attended many professional sporting events over the years. However, his favorite teams to watch and coach were his kids. Shaun was the dad who studied the mechanics of a swing or a shot so he could provide some helpful tips. He was their biggest fan.
He also loved music, particularly Sammy Hagar who he had seen nearly two dozen times. While many of the concerts were special, last year he was able to take his entire family to see Sammy. It was his kids’ first rock concert and one they will never forget.
He was a loyal friend, known for his thoughtful advice, and ability to make anyone feel seen and heard. His presence was steady, and his heart and door were always open.
Even in the face of cancer, Shaun remained steadfast. He fought with grace, grit, and determination—never letting the illness define him and always choosing hope. His strength during this past year was a reflection of the courage he carried throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Shirley Spradlin, paternal grandparents, Jim and Joann Newell and his aunt and uncle, Jane and Frank Coats.
Shaun is survived by his wife Amanda, their children Elliott and Meredith, his parents, Mike and Judy Newell, his maternal grandfather, John Spradlin, and his in-laws, Joseph and Barbara Bergschneider, Paul (Janie) Bergschneider, Emily (Jason) Fuchs, Catherine Bergschneider, and Susan (Ryan) Cain. He is mourned by several aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as countless friends, colleagues, and community members who were fortunate to know him.
Shaun’s life was a testament to the power of family, truth, kindness, and service. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at the Trailside Event Center (4416 N. Prospect Road, Peoria Heights, IL) beginning at 5pm. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In memory of Shaun, those wishing to honor his life and legacy may make donations to the “For the Benefit of Elliott and Meredith Newell” account—established to support their future college education—at any CEFCU Member Center. Memorial contributions may also be directed to the Center for Prevention of Abuse, P.O. Box 3855, Peoria, IL, 61612. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this very difficult time.
