Daniel Patrick McGarity

Surrounded by his loving family at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, died peacefully on Sunday, September 23, 2018 in his 95th year. Daniel was the beloved husband for 65 years of the late Margaret McGarity (nee-Groome); cherished father of Maureen McGarity, Michael McGarity (Bonnie), Anne Stancek (Andrew), Christine Thompson (Paul) and Carol McGarity (Kevin Shipley); loving grandpa of Valerie (Dave), Claire Marie, Christopher (Shastina), Matthew, Irene, Kathleen, Joan, Ellen, David, Michael, Jonathan, Mary and Olivia, and great-grandpa of Mia. He is the dear brother of Pat O’Halloran and is predeceased by his sister Bernadette Cochrane and Agnes McGarity. Daniel had a passion for living. He had a sharp mind, a lively sense of humour and a firm Catholic faith. He received his education at De La Salle College in Toronto, his B.A. at the University of Toronto and his M.A. at Cornell University in N.Y. He taught high school English with enthusiasm and dedication for thirty-five years, including at Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute and Crestwood Secondary School. Daniel loved theatre, a love that was embodied in his contribution to high school drama productions and the Peterborough Theatre Guild, and in annual trips with his family to the Stratford Festival Theatre. He delighted in Sunday afternoon nature walks, which are fondly remembered by his family who continue the tradition. In retirement, he travelled with his dear wife Maggie, visited with his children and their spouses and took utter joy in his thirteen grandchildren of whom he was so proud. His family will dearly miss him. Visitation will take place on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street. A memorial mass will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church (859 Barnardo Avenue).
