LONGFORD (nee Hall), Elizabeth Ann. Died peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Tuesday February 13, 2024 at the age of 79. Retired bank teller, medical secretary, and community care support worker in her final working years. Dear mother of Christine Longford (Sandy) of Manitoba and Shawna Longford (Jack) of Peterborough. Loving Nana of Louisa (Julien), Sacha (Wisam), Ariana (Nick), Aurora (Adam), Justin and Lucas. Treasured Great Nana of Saira. Sister of David Hall (Bev) and the late Donald and Mary. Survived by husband David Longford.
Mom (like her siblings) had a great sense of humour, and spent hours on the phone laughing with family and friends. She was a talker, and was always happy to get a phone call. She appreciated all of the numerous calls and messages from family and friends over the years, keeping her updated and "in the know".
Mom loved and was dedicated to her family. Her two daughters were loved and supported unconditionally until dementia affected her insight. She had special relationships with each one of her grandchildren, and made them all feel treasured and loved. Her willingness to help and share in the care of family was never ending until she physically couldn't anymore. She adored both of her sons-in-law (Jack and Sandy) and appreciated all the help and care she received from them. She maintained and valued her relationships with her nieces and nephews. She made and maintained a connection to everyone she loved. She had “fear of missing out” when she couldn't be at our gatherings due to hospitalization or illness. We would have to take the party to her: in multiple hospital rooms, a dining room at Rubidge, or the common room at the Kingsford.
Mom had enjoyed fairly good health until she was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis. Her mobility and her quality of life suffered. Over the next few years mom's health continued to decline, despite amazing treatment and her positive attitude. She was always wanting to get back home to her cat, and her quiet life in her apartment. She had good friends in the building, and spent many happy afternoons outside (or in the common room) chatting with neighbours and friends. She was reliant on all of the amazing PSW homecare staff who took care of her, (thanks to you all!) and of course Shawna and Jack whom without all of their combined efforts, mom would not have been able to stay in her home.
Mom's greatest gift was her enjoyment of very simple pleasures: a cup of tea, a maple cookie or piece of cake, "fish and chips" and watching TV with her cat on her lap. Her mantra had been - "Enjoy every moment".
Mom was the "Queen Cat Lady". Her love and care for all animals (but particularly cats) dictated how she made decisions in her life. The cats had to be taken care of! Her nine cat lives finally ran out. She will be sorely missed by all of us, and of course her furry companion “Thea”.
Rest in peace Mom - "You were always on my mind."
