OVENS, George Douglas – George passed away at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Sunday, December 17, 2023, shortly after his 98th birthday. Loving partner to Dawn Straka for over 25 years. Husband of the late Jean Anne Ovens, married for over 40 years until her passing in 1993. Loving father of Greg (Kerry), Jan (Martin) and Mark (Elizabeth). Beloved grandfather of Samantha (Matt) and Erica (Nick). “Papa G” will also be missed by Dawn’s son Chris (Carmen) and their daughters Everleigh and Maeven and her son Tim (Reina) and their son Tor and daughter Päivi and her daughters Mimi (Chris) and Lyn.
George had a long and successful career at Ontario Hydro, retiring in the 1980s. He was always active and loved hockey and golf, playing both well into his 80s. He also had a passion for nature, geology and collecting rocks from all over the world. George enjoyed great conversation and never turned down an offer of a beer or a glass of wine. He loved to putter in his workshop with creative art projects using found objects from nature like driftwood and rocks, and never threw out a broken or spare part as “you might need it someday”.
