SLATER, George passed away peacefully on September 14, 2021, at the age of 88. Beloved husband to Audrey (predeceased). Loving dad to Dan Slater (predeceased), Scott Slater (Wendy), Lori Steiner (David) and Julie Slater (predeceased). Grandpa to Jeff (Brian), Kevin (Diana), Allison (Brandan), Liane, Emma and Kelly. Great grandfather to Valentina. Loving brother to Thirza Waters (predeceased) and brother-in-law to Lillian Fisher, James Fisher (predeceased), and Bill Waters (predeceased). Uncle to Brian Fisher (Anna), Walter Fisher, Bill Waters (Bonnie) and Al Waters (Michele) and their families.
Starting his career as a gold caster, he later achieved great success running his own retail business with Audrey for over 30 years in the Beaches area of Toronto. “Mr. Grenadier”, as he was often called, greeted all the customers with friendly hello and honest service.
George was a creative man. He loved the challenge of figuring out and creating wonderful things – from jewellery designs, to complicated and unique costumes for Kew Beach Couples Club show, to birdhouses and compiling videos. He loved rocks and spent hours at the cottage moving big boulders around to just the right spot. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with Dan and Scott and enjoyed some wonderful fishing adventures with Barry, Reg and Bert. He was an avid card player (poker, bridge and “hands & feet”) and you needed lots of patience playing with him, as he strategized each move. He loved birds and spent many hours building intricate houses for them and then filming their visits. And he loved to travel, to the cottage, Cuba and Mexico with some amazing friends. So many great memories.
He missed his Audrey so much this past year and is happy that he is now reunited with her forever. He felt so lucky and proud to have such a beautiful woman, both inside and out, as his wife for 64 years.
A joint memorial service for George & Audrey will be held in October. Due to capacity guidelines and social distancing requirements, in person attendance is by invitation, however a live stream will be available. Details to follow. If you wish, donations can be made in his memory to Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto.
