Davis (nee Bingham), Helen Grey – Passed quietly at Canterbury Gardens, Peterborough on Wednesday, April 28th just shy of her 100th birthday. Predeceased by her beloved husband Bob (2018). Loving mother of Barbara Gilbert (Rick), Eric Davis, Ruth Spencley (Larry John MacKay) (Jim 2005) and Shirley Vollett (Jim) and much loved by her 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is survived by brother-in-law Mervyn Tripp.
Born May 29, 1921 to Oswald and Elsie (nee Carnahan) Bingham, Helen lived with her parents and grandparents on the family farm near Almonte, Ontario. The oldest of 3, she was close playmates with her late sister Doris and big sister to her late brother Keith. School was always her passion, so it was no surprise that she elected to train as a teacher. She taught for 5 years, during which time Bob returned from service overseas and they married in July 1944. They enjoyed 74 happy years of marriage.
Helen was a mother and homemaker extraordinaire, interested in every aspect of her children’s lives and development. This extended to her grandchildren and great grands.
She returned to supply teaching for 10 years once her own children were in school. Then she focused on her many volunteer activities. Helen had many roles at her beloved St. John’s Anglican Church and more than 25 years of service with the Telecare Distress Line. Her caring, listening ear continued to touch others to the end of her life. She enjoyed golfing, curling, playing bridge and travel with Bob, most notably their time in Bangladesh. By example Helen taught us to focus on the good, be grateful for what we have and to care for others. We will miss her caring presence, her delicious and lovingly made buns and her unfailing remembrance of our many birthdays! In her final years she has been surrounded by her Canterbury Gardens family and we are so grateful for their capable and loving care. Despite current restrictions, all four of her children are thankful they were able to be with her during the last week of her life.
Helen’s children will gather for a private service and burial on Wednesday May 5, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to view through livestream at www.comstockkaye.com (Scroll down to the service information for Helen and click Join Livestream button 5 minutes prior to the service time).
