September 29, 1937 – October 5, 2024
Gary Lech, a beloved member of the Peterborough community, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024, at the age of 87. Born and raised in Peterborough, Gary devoted his life to supporting the people and town that he loved.
As the proud owner of Wm Lech & Sons Furriers, a family enterprise that served its community and beyond for 146 years, Gary embodied the values of connection, dedication and hard work. Throughout his career, he wore many hats—Clerk, Salesman, Furrier, and ultimately business owner/president—before retiring at the age of 70.
An avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, Gary loved engaging in lively discussions about baseball, sharing his enthusiasm with friends and family. He treasured the relationships he made, frequently imparting wisdom and warmth to younger generations. His keen interest in politics sparked many engaging conversations, making him a thoughtful source of insight on current events.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Marjorie Lech, as well as his brother, Robert Lech. He is survived by his nephew, Karl Lech of Lakefield, Ontario.
He shared a special bond with his chosen family of over 40 years, including the late Alicja Ziubrzycki and Crystal Eatmon, and survived by Nathan Eatmon, Michael Eatmon, Ashton Eatmon, Reah Jo Hamm, and his goddaughters Carly Smith and Alicia Snape. Gary also leaves behind many dear friends, including Mathieu and Krystal Ouellet. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Extendicare Peterborough for their compassionate care during Gary’s final years.
Gary's love, humor, and gentle spirit will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
