

Sister Jean entered into her eternal rest at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Thursday, May 17th 2012 in the 65th year of her religious life. She was the daughter of the late Leo Patrick Rooney and Evangeline Nault. Sister Jean is lovingly remembered by the Sisters in her community, her sisters Hope Cain (Griff) of Ottawa and Rosemary Hostin (George) of Edmonton, her sister-in-law Kaye Rooney of Burlington and many nieces and nephews. Sister is predeceased by her brothers Lorne, Leonard, James and Leo, and her sisters Patricia Smith and Charlotte Mears.
Sister Jean received her education in Ottawa. For many years she worked as a medical secretary at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Peterborough and in General Supervision, Admitting and Payroll at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan. In 1976, along with Sister Brigid Todd, she opened Woodland House for incarcerated women. Sister Jean served eight years in congregational leadership, after which she moved to Edmonton, and took a position at Leeder House, a home for single mothers. Upon her return to Peterborough she was appointed the community’s archivist, a position she held for 14 years. Sister Jean will be remembered in the hearts of many for her tremendous sense of humor. Visitation at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough will take place on Sunday May 20th from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mount St. Joseph on Monday May 21 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery at a later date.
