

MARTIN, Leonard ‘Leon Orzechowski’ (W. W. II Veteran) - Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on November 14, 2009 in his 91st year. Beloved husband of the late Wanda, cherished friend of Isabella Gynane, loving father of Andrew Martin (Kim), Krystyna Edwards (Jeff), all of Peterborough, Lucja Double (John Cheeseborough) and Stephanie Hunt (Tony), who reside in the U.K. Loving grandfather of Robert (Sam), Ryan ‘Marty’, Alyssa and Emily. Great grandfather of Ellie, Archie and Oliver. Dear uncle of Voytek Orzechowski (Sophie), Greg Pass (Cyndy) and Jeff Pass (Judy). Survived by sister Lucja and Stephanie, both of Poland. Great uncle of Monika, Agnes, Karol, Alex, Daniel, Jordan, Alexandra, Martin and Peter and several generations of nieces and nephews in Poland. During the war, Leonard served with the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade, who received the Netherlands supreme military decoration, the Military William Order, awarded by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 2006 for their bravery in Operation Market Garden. After immigrating to Canada, he co-founded Superior Cleaners with his wife Wanda. Over the years, he was involved in many organizations, including the Polish Veterans and Combatants Association, the Polish Canadian Heritage Association, Race Relations and Multicultural Association, including the Canada Day Festivities and the New Canadian Centre. Visitation at COMSTOCK FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 356 Rubidge St., on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral Service at the FREE METHODIST CHURCH, 450 Landsdowne St. East at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 with the Reverend Bradley Weeks officiating.
